Weeks of grassfires and wildfires have torn through nature reserves, farmland and beauty spots across the UK, leaving conservationists to grapple with the slow, uncertain work of restoring scorched landscapes. A blaze that started deliberately on land off The Moor, Fradley, Staffordshire, two weeks ago is just one example of a wave of fires that has hit the West Midlands and beyond in recent weeks. While flames can strip a thriving habitat down to blackened earth within hours, experts say recovery unfolds over months, years or even decades.
Dan Brown, deputy chief executive of Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust, explained that losing grasses, wildflowers and trees removes the food sources invertebrates depend on, which in turn strips away habitat for butterflies and bees. That knock-on effect then reaches birds and mammals that rely on insects as prey.
"When we lose grasses, wildflowers and trees to fire, we lose the food plants that invertebrates rely on, taking away spaces in which butterflies and bees can thrive. That impact cascades upwards to birds and mammals who would normally use invertebrates as a food source," he said.

Last week, thirty firefighters battled a blaze at Portway Hill in Oldbury, West Midlands, on land managed by the trust. The site had supported scarce plant species such as pyramidal and bee orchids, along with a rare colony of marbled white butterflies dependent on common knapweed and red fescue.
"We've lost these plants now, and it will take years of work to restore the meadow so that marbled white butterflies can return," said Brown.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service reported responding to roughly 600 outdoor fires in July, about double the figure for the same month a year earlier. Three of these fires broke out at Cannock Chase, a protected stretch of countryside, woodland and lowland heath, killing wildlife including adders and toads. Fifteen fire crews were deployed to tackle the largest of the three Cannock Chase blazes on a Wednesday.

Jeff Sim, head of nature reserves at Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, said the fires were undoing years of careful conservation effort.
"Each day we're seeing fires devastate green spaces and my team is incredibly worried. In an instant we could lose years of careful restoration work. It can take decades for land to recover from fire, even with dedicated intervention and restoration work," he said.
The damage extends well beyond Staffordshire. Across the West Midlands, nature reserves have burned, farmers' fields and crops have been destroyed, and deliberately started fires in parks and beauty spots have spread out of control. The pattern has been repeated nationwide.
At Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, a fire that broke out last week scorched around 371 acres (150 hectares) of lowland heath. Conservationists have warned the effects on wildlife and the landscape will linger for years, with the National Trust calling the destruction "absolutely devastating."

In Scotland, a wildfire in the Cairngorms National Park has burned roughly 10 square miles (26 sq km) of moorland and forest since starting last month. The blaze damaged the RSPB's Loch Garten reserve at Abernethy, home to thousands of species, killing insects, reptiles, trees, lichens and mosses.

This run of destructive fires echoes similar incidents documented elsewhere in the UK this year. A National Trust ranger has said a campfire almost certainly triggered a five-day blaze at Headon Warren on the Isle of Wight, which damaged nine hectares of rare habitat, as detailed in an earlier report on the Isle of Wight fire. Elsewhere, wildfires in Northern Ireland's Mourne Mountains destroyed more than seven square miles of land earlier this year, with experts cautioning that full recovery could take centuries. A separate blaze on Dartmoor last May burned over 1,000 acres, prompting authorities to introduce new firebreaks and emergency access measures to reduce future risk. Meanwhile, the Suffolk heathland fire affecting Dunwich Heath and the nearby RSPB Minsmere reserve has since stabilised, with the National Trust launching a fundraising appeal to support recovery efforts.
Is restoration possible?
Brown said that while recovery is achievable, it is a gradual and carefully managed process.
"We can restore habitat by seeding meadows and planting trees, but this process takes a long time and has to be carefully managed," he said.
Some of the trust's existing conservation schemes have already made certain landscapes more resistant to fire. Planting native broadleaf trees produces cooler, shadier woodland less prone to ignition, while restoring rivers and wetlands helps retain moisture in the surrounding land. At The Roaches, a rugged rocky area of the Peak District where fire broke out in June, sphagnum moss had kept parts of the ground wet enough to limit the worst of the damage.
Dr Kate Ashbrook, a conservation ecologist and senior lecturer at the University of Worcester, said the priority after a fire should be safeguarding whatever habitat survived.
"Any areas that escape the fire will contain the surviving animals or life," she said.

Research offers some grounds for cautious optimism about how quickly landscapes can bounce back. A global analysis found that around 87% of burned vegetation returned to pre-fire productivity levels within two years, though the pace of recovery depends heavily on post-fire climate conditions and the extent of human intervention, according to a study published in Nature. On federal lands in the United States, post-fire recovery is typically organised into three distinct stages — fire suppression damage repair, emergency stabilisation, and long-term recovery and restoration — according to the National Interagency Fire Center, a framework that mirrors the phased approach UK conservationists describe when tackling burned habitats.
Wild Ken Hill, a nature restoration project in Norfolk that suffered a fire in 2022, offers a real-world example of landscapes recovering over time. Founder Dominic Buscall said the experience showed how resilient natural systems can be even after severe damage.
"The wildfire at Wild Ken Hill in 2022 was devastating at the time, but one of the most striking lessons has been how resilient nature can be. Although some impacts take years to recover from, vegetation regenerated quickly and wildlife has steadily recolonised the affected areas. Given the opportunity, natural systems can be remarkably robust," he said.

Still, Ashbrook cautioned that genuine ecological recovery hinges on soil fungi returning, plants re-establishing themselves and invertebrate populations rebuilding, while mature woodland lost to fire could take decades to regrow.
What about our gardens?
For many households, the visible damage is closer to home, with sustained hot weather leaving lawns browned, plants wilted and soil cracked. Josh Cushing, owner of Goldstone Hall Hotel & Gardens in Shropshire, said grass is tougher than it looks and typically survives a spell of drought without dying off.
Darren Rudge, a radio broadcaster known as the Laughing Gardener, offered similar reassurance to worried gardeners.
"The roots are alive. It's totally OK and you do not need to worry about your lawn," he said, adding that lawns were "asleep rather than dead."
What could the future look like?
Climate change is producing hotter, drier conditions that leave landscapes increasingly susceptible to fire. Ashbrook said the growing frequency of grassfires is especially worrying given the fragile state of British wildlife already.
"A lot of British wildlife is on its knees anyway, so anything that is going to make it more stressed, whether that's the loss of flowers or a nesting habitat, has a significant impact," she said.
Conservationists argue that building resilience into the countryside can turn nature itself into a line of defence against future fires. Even so, Brown said the single biggest factor in reducing wildfire risk remains human behaviour, urging people to avoid lighting disposable barbecues or campfires in green spaces, never drop lit cigarettes, and always take litter home.
"Everyone has a role to play," said Buscall. "Most wildfires are caused by human activity, which means most are preventable."
Although the blackened landscapes left behind look severe today, experts say that with time, and with changes to how the countryside is managed and protected, recovery remains within reach.
