How to tell us we got something wrong, and what we do about it.

Reporting an error

If you believe an article on this site is inaccurate, misleading or unfair, please contact us through our contact form. It helps if you include the address of the article, the specific passage you are querying and, where you can, a link to the correct information. Anyone may report an error — you do not need to be the subject of the article.

What happens next

• We check it against the source: Because our articles are drawn from a published report, most queries can be settled by comparing our version with the original.
• We correct or we remove: If our summary has departed from the source, we correct it. If an article cannot be made accurate, we remove it rather than leave it standing.
• We respond to you: We aim to reply to every correction request within five working days.

How corrections are marked

Where a correction changes the substance of an article, the article carries an updated publication date so that readers can see it has been amended. Trivial fixes such as spelling are made without a note. We do not quietly rewrite an article to disguise an error that a reader has already seen.

When the original report changes

News stories develop, and the outlets we draw from update and occasionally retract their reports. Our version reflects the source as it stood when we published. If the original has since been corrected or withdrawn, the original is authoritative and ours may be out of date. Where we become aware that a source has been withdrawn, the article based on it is removed from this site automatically.

Removal requests and right of reply

If you are the subject of an article and consider it unfair or damaging, you may ask us to remove it or to publish your response. Tell us what you object to and why. We will not remove accurate, properly sourced reporting simply because it is unwelcome, but we will always consider a request and reply to it.
