Glasgow's Subway service resumed operations after both the Inner and Outer Circle lines were suspended during the morning rush hour due to a technical malfunction in the control room.
The transport network halted services at approximately 08:30, requiring passengers to vacate stations and arrange alternative travel arrangements. Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), the operator responsible for the system, announced the disruption via social media.
Both Inner and Outer Circles are currently suspended due to a technical issue in the control room. We are working to resolve the issue and will update when services resume.
SPT issued an apology to commuters affected by the unexpected closure and its impact on their journeys.
What caused the disruption?
The technical fault occurred within the newly relocated control room infrastructure. SPT had recently transferred operations of its signalling and communications systems to this facility, which the transport operator characterises as state-of-the-art technology. The modernised system incorporates fully-automated passenger announcements and enhanced information displays on train carriages to improve the traveller experience.
This incident follows a separate fault the previous day, when a train malfunction forced the Outer Circle to close temporarily on Wednesday.

The Glasgow Subway has undergone several upgrades in recent months. The system introduced contactless payment options in March 2026, with fares capped on a daily and weekly basis to provide passengers with cost certainty. Additionally, the service extended operating hours until 01:00 on concert nights at Bellahouston Park during summer 2026, supporting major music events and sustainable transport choices for attendees.
