A man in his 40s sustained severe injuries when he was shot in the leg during an incident in west Belfast on Sunday evening. The attack occurred at approximately 21:30 BST in an alley connecting the Falls Road and Ross Road, according to police.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) received notification of the shooting from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) after responders attended to a casualty in the Falls Road vicinity. Officers who arrived at the scene confirmed the man had been struck once in the leg and was transported to hospital for medical care.
Authorities characterised the injuries as severe, though not immediately life-threatening. A PSNI statement noted that
although his injuries are thankfully not life-threatening, they are severe and will no doubt leave him with lasting physical and emotional trauma.
The incident has prompted concern among local representatives. Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey issued a statement condemning the shooting, describing it as
completely unacceptable and is not wanted by local people. Maskey called on those responsible to reflect on the consequences of their actions, stating that
those responsible need to stop and think about the fear and distress their actions cause in the community.
Police have emphasised the broader impact of the attack on the neighbourhood. The PSNI said the shooting has
caused fear and disruptionin the community, and noted the contradiction inherent in the violence, observing that it affects
the very community those responsible for this criminal act claim to protect.
This incident follows a pattern of serious violence in Belfast in recent months. A stabbing on Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast on 8 June left a man seriously injured, while another assault outside a licensed premises in west Belfast on 14 June resulted in a 30-year-old man being critically injured. These incidents underscore ongoing concerns about violent crime affecting different areas of the city.
