A man has been taken into custody following an incident in which a taxi travelled in the wrong direction along the A55 dual carriageway on Anglesey on Monday evening. The vehicle was stopped by police, who temporarily closed the road after responding to reports of dangerous driving. Footage circulating on social media appeared to capture police vehicles intercepting the taxi during the operation.
Prior to the taxi entering the dual carriageway, a cyclist had been struck and knocked from their bicycle on London Road in the nearby town of Holyhead. The same incident also resulted in damage to several vehicles that were parked in the area. The cyclist sustained injuries that were assessed as non-life threatening and was transported to hospital for treatment.
North Wales Police confirmed that the arrested individual remained in custody as of Tuesday. Officers stated that despite the vehicle's journey in the incorrect direction along the A55, no collisions occurred as a direct result of this dangerous manoeuvre. The force indicated that enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident were continuing.
This incident follows a pattern of serious driving incidents across North Wales in recent weeks. In July, a driver was seriously injured after his vehicle flipped and fell from the Great Orme cliffs following erratic driving and multiple collisions with walls and fences. Additionally, two men were arrested following a four-vehicle collision on the A4067 near Craig-y-Nos that left five people injured, including a five-year-old child.
