Pornhub has returned to the Australian market eight months after withdrawing due to new age verification requirements, though access remains limited to adults using Apple devices who have completed the company's age-confirmation process.

On 7 October, parent company Aylo announced it was restoring service for eligible age-confirmed iOS users in Australia, following Apple's introduction of device-level age verification tools in the country. The platform had departed the Australian market in March when stricter laws took effect requiring proof of age to access adult content.

Why Pornhub Left Australia

When Australia introduced its age-restricted material rules in March, Pornhub's parent company cited concerns that the requirements would not effectively protect children while creating significant data privacy risks. The company argued that users would likely circumvent the rules by migrating to non-compliant platforms, ultimately exposing minors to unregulated content rather than preventing access.

The regulatory framework applies to nine categories of online services, including pornography sites, AI companions, gaming platforms and messaging applications, all developed by technology-industry members under Australia's Online Safety Act. Breaches can result in civil penalties reaching A$49.5 million.

Aylo's other platforms, RedTube and YouPorn, similarly restricted Australian access when the new rules took effect.

How Apple's Approach Changed the Equation

Aylo determined that Apple's device-based age verification system provided a privacy-protective solution that addressed its earlier concerns. Rather than requiring users to submit personal information to individual websites and applications, Apple's approach establishes child safety as the default setting across all devices unless the owner confirms adult status.

Apple users can verify their age using a credit card, passport, driver's license or government-issued identification. This method effectively makes every iPhone and iPad child-safe from the outset, according to Aylo's assessment.

For years, Aylo has advocated for device-based age verification as the most effective and privacy-protecting approach to help prevent minors from accessing age-inappropriate content online
, said Aylo's vice-president of brand and community Alex Kekesi in a statement.

What Makes Device-Level Verification Different

The device-based model reduces the need for users to disclose personal details across multiple platforms, addressing privacy concerns that had prompted Pornhub's initial withdrawal. Additionally, this approach limits the effectiveness of virtual private networks (VPNs), which users commonly employ to circumvent geographic restrictions by masking their location.

It is important to note that Australia's age-restricted material rules do not mandate a single specific age-assurance method or require government identification. Providers retain the flexibility to select an appropriate verification approach that meets regulatory standards.

What About Android and Other Devices?

Pornhub's return remains exclusive to Apple's ecosystem for now. Android users and those on other platforms cannot currently access the site in Australia, as Apple is the only major device manufacturer that has implemented the type of system-level age verification that Aylo determined satisfies its privacy and safety requirements.

The company's decision to return only for Apple users reflects its stated preference for device-based verification over traditional methods such as facial recognition, digital identity systems or credit card details submitted directly to content platforms.
