Nigerian drug enforcement officials have arrested an alleged Mexican drug kingpin who attempted to depart through Lagos international airport, leading to the discovery of what authorities describe as an industrial-scale methamphetamine production facility—the third such operation allegedly connected to Mexican nationals uncovered within four months.
Arturo Carrera Loaiza was detained on 19 August 2026 as he tried to leave the country, according to Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. The arrest, disclosed publicly on 15 September 2026, prompted investigators to search a property in Ebonyi state where they recovered chemicals and equipment associated with methamphetamine manufacturing.
When officers apprehended Loaiza at the airport, they discovered digital photographs depicting him in what appeared to be laboratory attire alongside apparatus consistent with drug production. Metadata embedded in these images directed enforcement personnel to the Ebonyi location, situated at a construction site in southeast Ebonyi State.
Loaiza has rejected the allegations, claiming he travelled to Nigeria at the invitation of a local contact for a restaurant business opportunity, according to a statement from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
