M5 Closure in Somerset Due to Overhead Cable Risk
The M5 motorway in Somerset is currently closed in both directions between junction 22 (Burnham-on-Sea) and junction 23 (Bridgwater North) because of a potential hazard involving overhead electricity cables that may fall onto the road.
National Highways has reported significant delays, with congestion extending up to eight miles in both directions and delays reaching approximately 115 minutes.
"Our engineers are on site and working as quickly and safely as possible to repair the fault.
We know this will be frustrating for people facing longer journeys in the hot weather, and are sorry for the disruption caused. We will reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so."
National Grid issued this statement regarding the ongoing situation.
Motorists are advised by National Highways to avoid the affected area and to plan their journeys accordingly.

BBC reporter Dean Poolman, who experienced the traffic firsthand, described the situation after being on the M5 for about an hour. He noted that the traffic began to slow just before junction 22 near Burnham-on-Sea.
"All you could see was an empty road in front of us as we queued to get off the motorway," Poolman said.
"The diversion route via the A38 is very busy and the surrounding lanes."
All traffic is currently being diverted onto the A38 while the M5 remains closed.

National Highways has provided specific guidance for drivers: those traveling southbound should follow the solid diamond symbol on road signs to use the A38 diversion, while northbound travelers should follow the solid circle symbol on the same route in the opposite direction.
