A new railway station in East Renfrewshire opened its doors to passengers on Sunday 27 September 2026, marking a significant transport milestone for the Barrhead area. The £18.3m Balgray station, located on the Neilston line between Neilston and Patterton, welcomed its first train at approximately 08:50, connecting residents directly with Glasgow city centre and surrounding communities.
The station was authorised by the rail regulator on 4 September 2026, clearing the way for passenger services to commence. The facility features two 125-metre platforms, a footbridge with lifts providing step-free access, waiting shelters, and modern passenger systems designed to accommodate growing demand from the local community.
Half-hourly train services now operate between Balgray and Glasgow Central, with stops at intermediate stations including Whitecraigs, Mount Florida and Cathcart. The new connection is expected to ease access to local attractions such as Dams to Darnley Country Park and provide residents with improved transport links for work and leisure activities.
What facilities does the station offer?
The station includes an 80-space car park with 16 electric vehicle charging points, alongside newly constructed walking routes that connect to nearby homes and local pathways. These amenities were designed to encourage sustainable travel and integrate the station seamlessly into the surrounding area.
How was the project funded and delivered?
Funding came through the Glasgow City Region city deal, with contributions of £7.87m each from the UK and Scottish governments, alongside £2.57m from East Renfrewshire Council. The project was delivered in partnership with East Renfrewshire Council, Transport Scotland, ScotRail and Story Contracting, and was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.
Preparatory work on the Balgray project began in October 2023, with the final business case approved in September 2024. The development represents a substantial investment in regional transport infrastructure and community connectivity.

Liam Sumpter, managing director of Network Rail Scotland, said the new station would make
a real difference to everyday lifefor locals. He added that
the community has been at the heart of this project in the lead up to opening day, and we hope Balgray continues to be a valued part of the area for years to come, helping people connect with the places and opportunities that matter most to them.
Joanne Maguire, ScotRail's managing director, highlighted the station's role in promoting sustainable transport.
It will play an important part in encouraging more people to choose rail, as an alternative to travelling by car, helping to reduce congestion on our roads,she said.
