Cristiano Ronaldo has stated he will not retire from international football, despite acknowledging he deserves disciplinary action for abandoning Portugal's Nations League camp following a disagreement over his playing status.

The 41-year-old captain departed the squad after being left unused as a substitute during a match against Norway. His frustration intensified when he learned he would not start the subsequent fixture against Denmark, prompting his departure from the camp.

Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al-Nassr, holds the distinction of being Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer with 146 goals across 234 international appearances—both records at the global level. His contributions have been instrumental in securing major tournament victories, including Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles for his country.

What punishment does Ronaldo believe he deserves?

In a detailed statement released to address the controversy, Ronaldo acknowledged that his conduct warranted consequences and called for the Portuguese Football Federation to impose appropriate sanctions.

"The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them. I believe the punishment should not be reduced,"
he stated, emphasizing his accountability.
"I have already apologised, but I know that actions have consequences."

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United player's willingness to accept discipline reflects his recognition that his departure breached the trust placed in him by the coaching staff.

Will Ronaldo play for Portugal again?

Despite the incident, Ronaldo has made clear his intention to continue representing his nation at international level. He indicated that once any suspension period concludes, he will be ready to rejoin the squad.

"After my suspension period ends, I will be available, as I always have been, to compete and win with our national team,"
he said.

Ronaldo's continued availability depends on maintaining his physical fitness and securing regular playing time at club level.

"Provided he was 'physically fit, playing with my team, and hopefully scoring goals', he would like to continue to play international football."

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus signalled openness to Ronaldo's potential return, indicating on Sunday that the possibility of the captain featuring for the national team again remains viable, provided the appropriate resolution to the current situation is reached.
