Welcome to live coverage of day three of the third Test between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town. This pivotal match in the series decider arrives after an unpredictable opening two days, during which momentum has swung dramatically between the Proteas and the touring Australians.
According to The Guardian, Australia currently holds a one-run advantage over South Africa's first innings score of 329, with six wickets remaining in their second innings. Josh Inglis (85 not out) is making the most of his unexpected selection as a replacement for Steve Smith, while Alex Carey (51 not out) has returned to form. The visitors occupy a commanding position as they attempt to establish a substantial first innings lead. However, the volatility of this contest was underscored just over a day ago when South Africa stood at 327 for 6 and appeared poised to reach stumps, only to see the situation transform rapidly—a reminder that these two evenly matched teams can shift the balance of power within hours.
This series remains finely balanced after Australia's bowlers staged a dramatic comeback on day one of the third Test at Cape Town, with Mitch Starc taking 6 for 10 to dismiss South Africa. The contest is locked at 1-1 in the series, with both teams fighting for series victory.
Inglis and Carey will resume batting in approximately 45 minutes, with play commencing at 10:30am Cape Town time, 7:30pm AEDT, and 8:30am GMT. Readers are encouraged to share their thoughts and predictions throughout the day's play.
