Two men sentenced to six years for rape in underground car park

Two men have been sentenced to six years for raping a woman in an underground car park in County Tyrone on 10 September 2023. Luis Dos Martins Mariano, 20, and Alcino Soares, 21, will each serve three years in prison followed by three years on license.

Luis Dos Martins Mariano and Alcino Soares have been convicted and sentenced for a serious sexual assault that occurred in an underground car park in County Tyrone.

Dos Martins Mariano, aged 20, resides at Sloan Street in Dungannon, while Soares, aged 21, lives at Braeside, also in Dungannon. Both men entered guilty pleas to the rape charge prior to sentencing.

When did the assault occur?

The rape took place on 10 September 2023, at which time both perpetrators were 17 years old. The victim was 19 at the time of the incident. Portions of the assault were captured on closed-circuit television footage.

What sentence did the court impose?

During proceedings at Downpatrick Crown Court on Thursday, the presiding judge handed down identical sentences to both men. Each received a custodial term of six years in total, comprising three years to be served inside a prison facility and a further three years to be spent under license in the community.
