She continued:

We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation.

Context of child protection cases

This incident follows a series of high-profile cases involving the deaths of young children across the United Kingdom. In June, two individuals were charged with the murder of an eight-week-old baby in Lincolnshire, with both remanded into custody pending Crown Court proceedings. Additionally, a man was charged following the death of a nine-year-old girl discovered injured on an industrial estate in Arbroath, with police confirming no further suspects were being pursued in that case.

What happens next

South Yorkshire Police has indicated that further updates regarding the ages of those arrested and the progression of the investigation will be provided as inquiries continue. The force has deployed a dedicated team of detectives to establish the circumstances surrounding the baby's death and to pursue justice for the child.
