A 19-year-old man has admitted to stabbing a 17-year-old boy in an unprovoked attack that resulted in the teenager's leg being amputated below the knee. Idris Ahmed, from Riverside in Cardiff, changed his plea to guilty on Tuesday at Newport Crown Court after initially denying the charges. According to BBC News, the incident occurred during a bank holiday visit to Barry Island on 25 May 2026.

Ahmed had previously denied grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a knife, but reversed his position during the trial proceedings. He is scheduled to be sentenced on 27 November. The court heard that Wales Online reported the trial began on 2 November 2026 and was expected to last approximately 10 days before Ahmed's guilty plea.

The incident happened in Barry Island on a busy bank holiday on 25 May this year

The victim, a 17-year-old whose identity is protected due to his age, was at the beach with friends when the attack occurred. The court heard that Ahmed struck without warning after the teenager attempted to act as a peacemaker between Ahmed's group and the victim's companions. The stabbing happened in a crowded public area where BBC reported hundreds of people were present at the time.

What injuries did the victim sustain?

The teenager suffered severe blood loss and lost consciousness repeatedly in the immediate aftermath of the attack. He was airlifted to hospital where surgeons performed four operations in an attempt to save his leg. Despite receiving multiple blood transfusions, oxygen supply to the limb remained compromised. Medical staff determined that amputation below the knee was necessary to preserve the victim's life, and the lower portion of his leg was removed.

During the trial, the victim described the moment of injury to the jury, recalling that he fell to the ground and appeared pale as he told those around him:

I am going, I feel myself going.

How was Ahmed identified and apprehended?

After the stabbing, Ahmed fled the scene and disposed of the knife near a nearby building. An eyewitness observed him discarding the weapon and heard him say:

I need to dash this.
The same witness later identified Ahmed in an identity parade. Additionally, a woman taking selfies on the beach with her partner captured footage of Ahmed fleeing, providing further evidence of his presence at the scene.

What is Ahmed's background?

The court heard that Ahmed had no previous criminal convictions. At an earlier hearing in July, Hello Rayo reported that Ahmed had denied stabbing the victim or encouraging anyone else to do so, with Cardiff Crown Court setting 2 November as the provisional trial date and remanding him in custody.

What happens at sentencing?

His Honour Judge described grievous bodily harm with intent as a "very, very serious offence" and indicated that pre-sentencing reports would determine the length of Ahmed's detention in a young offenders institution. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for 27 November, where the judge will consider all relevant factors before imposing a sentence.
