Albert Williams has entered a guilty plea to the murder of Charlene Dowsell, a 41-year-old mother of four, following her death from a stab wound sustained during a street altercation in Newport. According to BBC News, Williams, 66, of Ruperra Street, Newport, admitted the charge at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday and faces sentencing on 21 December.
Dowsell died on 18 July after a fight erupted outside a property on St Vincent Road, near Newport city centre. Gwent Police received a call at 01:37 BST reporting that a man and woman were fighting and the woman was bleeding. Emergency responders located Dowsell a short distance away near Chepstow Road, but despite receiving first aid, she was pronounced dead at 03:15. Her father formally identified her following the discovery.
A post-mortem examination determined that Dowsell died from a stab wound to her left back that penetrated the lung, stomach and liver. The injury proved fatal despite immediate medical intervention at the scene.
Dowsell's family members, present in the courtroom during the proceedings, were visibly distressed as Williams entered his guilty plea. The family had previously released a tribute describing Dowsell as the "foundation" of their household, expressing their grief at the loss of their mother.
How has the family responded?
The family's statement conveyed the profound impact of Dowsell's death on her four children. They described it as "heartbreaking" that her offspring had been left without their mother, and released a message stating:
You're at peace now our beautiful girl. Gone but never forgotten.Dowsell's eldest child, Whitney, 25, organized a fundraiser for funeral costs, with her younger siblings reported as five, ten and twenty years old.
What is the timeline of legal proceedings?
Following his initial arrest, Williams was remanded in custody and scheduled to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on 22 July. The inquest into Dowsell's death was opened and subsequently suspended to allow the criminal investigation and court proceedings to continue. Area Coroner Rose Farmer oversaw the opening of the inquest before its suspension.
What happens next?
Williams will be sentenced on 21 December. A provisional trial date has been set for 4 January 2027, though this may be subject to change depending on the outcome of sentencing and any subsequent legal developments.
