A 23-year-old man has been arrested following an incident in which two police officers sustained injuries after their vehicle was struck repeatedly by another car in Londonderry on Thursday, 27 August 2026. The incident unfolded after officers from the District Support Team, conducting proactive patrols in the Waterside area, identified a vehicle they believed to be uninsured and being operated by a disqualified driver. When the officers signalled the driver to stop near the Foyle Bridge, the vehicle accelerated away at speed towards the city centre, showing what police described as little regard for other road users.
A pursuit began but was subsequently abandoned by officers. The vehicle was later spotted again by police near Templemore Road, and officers observed it entering an estate in the Galliagh area. According to police reports, the driver realised the estate was a dead end and, on several occasions, deliberately rammed a police vehicle, causing significant damage and injuring both officers inside.
Armed Support Unit officers brought the incident to a conclusion by making what police termed
"tactical contact"with the vehicle to stop the driver. The ramming caused substantial damage to the police vehicle, representing a cost to the taxpayer.
