A Labrador who gave birth to more than a dozen puppies has been brought together with her entire brood for an "emotional" gathering marking their first birthday, with the dogs travelling from homes across south Wales, Chippenham and Winchester to a barn near Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Tilly delivered 14 puppies last year, with two not surviving the birth. According to an earlier report on the birth, Tilly was three years old at the time and had been expected to deliver around six puppies based on a veterinary scan. The actual arrival proved far more dramatic, with the 12 surviving puppies arriving in three waves over approximately 15 hours, occurring about a week earlier than anticipated.
Tracy Thomas, Tilly's owner, orchestrated the reunion and described the logistics of assembling all the dogs as unexpectedly challenging.
Getting them together for the party was "easier than organising a photo of them. Definitely", she remarked, though she made clear this would be a one-time event.
"Just this one year,"she said.
How did the unexpected litter arrive?
Tracy and her husband Meirion were travelling abroad when Tilly went into labour, having arranged for Meirion's sister, Rhian Boxall, to provide care for the dog. Rhian recalled that Tilly began behaving unusually on the day of the birth.
"My brother assured me that the dog was not going to go into labour while he was away,"Rhian said.
"The vets assured him it was going to be a couple of weeks' time."
The birth unfolded in unexpected fashion.
"It came in various waves, we didn't really know what to expect or what was happening,"Rhian explained, noting that Tilly was tearing up sheets in her pen and
"a little bit distressed". The situation resolved successfully, with 12 healthy puppies born despite the dramatic circumstances.
How has Tracy stayed connected with all the puppy owners?
Tracy has maintained regular contact with all 12 families who adopted Tilly's offspring, using a WhatsApp group to share updates and coordinate visits. She has visited some of the puppies in their new homes and has hosted others when their owners travelled away on holiday. When the puppies were adopted, one of the conditions Tracy set was that they would all return for their first birthday celebration.
"They've all grown and they've all got their own personalities, you can see in their faces who's who,"Tracy observed as she watched the dogs reunite.
What did the owners think of the reunion?
Wendy and Robert Yardley attended the birthday party with Paisley, one of Tilly's six male offspring. They described the event as both "lovely" and "heartwarming".
"They all seem to be running around like absolute lunatics. They're having the time of their lives,"Wendy said.
Unlike Tracy, who has stated this will be the only year she organises such a gathering, Wendy expressed hope that the tradition might continue.
"I don't know whether all 12 of them will be together again, but you know, who knows? Maybe next year for the second birthday,"she said.
