Jaguar Crashes Through Shop Made Famous by Viral Shutter Incident

A Jaguar crashed through the Best-One shop in Tonteg, the same location where staff member Anne Hughes became trapped on a motorised shutter in March 2024, an incident that went viral globally. The shop's commemorative mural was quickly updated to include the vehicle collision.

A retail outlet in Tonteg, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has become the focus of news coverage once again after a vehicle collided with its storefront, striking the same location where a dramatic incident involving a staff member captured global attention months earlier.

The Best-One shop's CCTV system recorded the moment a Jaguar penetrated its entrance after the driver lost control, mounted protective bollards, and struck the establishment's coffee machine. Staff members inside described the collision as frightening, initially fearing it might be a deliberate attack.

The shop had previously gained widespread recognition in March 2024 when Anne Hughes, a member of staff, became trapped on the shop's motorised shutter while preparing to begin her shift. The incident left her suspended approximately 7 feet (2.1 metres) above ground level, and footage of the event accumulated tens of millions of views across social media platforms.

Anne Hughes passed away shortly before Christmas 2025 following a cancer diagnosis, at the age of 73, according to reporting published in January 2026.

How did staff react to the crash?

Workers at the shop were left shaken by Friday's incident. Donna Davies, who has been employed at the establishment for several years, described the moment the vehicle penetrated the storefront.

The car just came straight through, it was a loud noise and we didn't know what was happening but thought it could have been ram-raiders. It was scary.

Davies observed an elderly driver and passenger—both regular customers—inside the damaged vehicle. The driver explained that his foot had slipped as he attempted to exit the car, causing it to accelerate forward into the shop's entrance.

Hakim Akram, a shop employee and nephew of the owner, characterised the experience as disorienting.

It was a bit of a shock, he just came flying through - I didn't even know what happened until I saw the car. It was surreal and very loud. People thought it was a prank and AI when they first saw it on social media.

The occupants of the Jaguar were assessed at hospital and were reported to have escaped serious injury. Firefighters attended the scene to remove the vehicle from the shop.

How has the artwork been updated?

Local graffiti artist Tee2Sugars had previously immortalised Anne Hughes's shutter incident through a mural painted on the very shutter where she became trapped. Following the vehicle collision, the artist was commissioned to expand the artwork to include the Jaguar crash, and the new painting appeared three days after the crash.

Davies reflected on how the updated artwork connects both incidents. She noted that Anne would likely have found humour in the situation, saying:

Anne would be laughing at this, I think she'd like the updated shutter.
She added that customers visiting the shop on Saturday morning responded with amusement to the collision, though the immediate aftermath had been frightening.

How did the family respond?

Anne Hughes's family expressed relief that no one sustained serious injuries in the crash. Her son, Ceri, offered a lighthearted perspective on the string of dramatic events at the location, joking:

We can't believe the shop's luck, we are starting to wonder if all of this is an inside job. Tonteg Best-One - the only shop in the UK where you can be lifted 7ft in the air on Monday and driven through on a Friday.

The family confirmed they were pleased the artwork depicting Anne remained undamaged. Her grandchildren, Lilly and Alex, expressed that their grandmother would have approved of the updated mural, adding a playful comment:

Nan always preferred a Bentley but would settle with a Jag next to her on the shutter.

What happened to the shop?

Despite the severity of the damage to the storefront, the owner and family members worked through Friday evening and into Saturday to repair the entrance and restore the shop to operational status, ensuring customers could continue to be served.

One customer, Shaun, expressed disbelief at the sequence of events affecting the establishment, remarking on the improbability of two such dramatic incidents occurring at the same location within a relatively short timeframe.
