A barber in Guildford is stepping in to ease financial pressures on families by offering complimentary haircuts and school essentials ahead of the new academic year. Sid Gumbrell, proprietor of Clean Cuts Barber Shop in Surrey, is staging the initiative on Sunday from 09:00 BST to 17:00, providing services and materials at no cost to children preparing for school.
Beyond haircuts, young people attending the event will receive free stationery, pencil cases and water bottles. The initiative reflects growing concerns about the cumulative expense of back-to-school preparation, which encompasses uniforms, footwear, grooming and supplies.
To be honest, I know the struggles with the cost of things at the moment. School uniforms, shoes, haircuts, etc, it all adds up and if we can just help take one cost away it's a massive deal for us.Mr Gumbrell explained that the event aims to unite children in the community while providing tangible relief to households managing tight budgets during the school year transition.
The initiative has attracted corporate backing, with Tesco and Krispy Kreme both contributing donations to support the event. This reflects a broader pattern of community and business responses to back-to-school affordability challenges.
The timing aligns with wider efforts across the country to address school cost pressures. Earlier this summer, a uniform swap shop in Peterborough attracted over 600 people seeking free second-hand clothing, while a Hull-based charity reported surging demand for free school uniforms, having assisted over 100 children as new government restrictions on branded items take effect from September 2026. Similar initiatives have emerged elsewhere, including Kent's Community Cupboard offering pre-loved uniforms and a free uniform swap launched by two Devon mothers in Tavistock.
