The one person on board a small fishing boat made it to shore safely after the vessel ran aground on Bains beach in Lerwick following water ingress overnight. HM Coastguard was alerted to the incident at about 03:30 and confirmed that the person on board was safely ashore.

What emergency response was sent?

The Lerwick Port Authority support vessel, the RNLI lifeboat and coastguard rescue teams were sent to the scene after the alert was raised.

What is happening next?

A coastguard spokesperson said the counter-pollution team was monitoring the situation while harbour authorities and the council discussed a salvage plan.
