A 23-year-old motorist who engaged in dangerous driving, excessive speeding, evading police and operating a vehicle without insurance has been sentenced to four months in custody after being discovered by officers concealed in a waste bin.
Caolan Harkin, from Rosses Gate in Londonderry, was initially observed by police travelling at 84mph (135km/h) along Derry's Glenshane Road on 16 February. When officers began to pursue him, he accelerated away, drove through a red traffic light and forced multiple vehicles to take evasive action to avoid collision.
The case was heard at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Friday, where Harkin pleaded guilty to all charges. Following his apprehension, police located him hiding inside a bin.
Judge Condemns 'Catalogue of Appalling Driving'
District judge Ted Magill delivered a stern assessment during sentencing, describing Harkin's conduct as a "catalogue of appalling driving" that ranked among the most serious he had encountered in his judicial career. The judge stated it was "only by the grace of God" that the incident had not resulted in fatalities, emphasising the extreme danger posed by the defendant's actions.
During police interviews, Harkin initially declined to answer questions. He subsequently claimed that he had fled from officers because a passenger travelling with him was subject to a police warrant. However, the court was informed that Harkin had already been speeding at the moment police first identified him, undermining his explanation for the initial violation.
Harkin's defence barrister acknowledged uncertainty as to whether the passenger explanation improved or worsened the circumstances, stating that "the facts speak for themselves."
Judge Magill noted that had Harkin not entered a guilty plea, he would have been convicted following trial. In addition to the custodial sentence, Harkin has been disqualified from driving for a period of two years.
This case reflects broader concerns about dangerous driving offences in the region. Similar incidents involving police pursuits have occurred in nearby areas, highlighting the risks posed when motorists attempt to evade law enforcement.
