Prime Minister Andy Burnham has defended his decision to appear on a celebrity edition of Channel 4's Gogglebox after opposition leader Kemi Badenoch questioned whether he has sufficient time to balance such commitments with his duties in office. According to BBC News, Burnham will feature on the show alongside Steve Rotheram, the Labour mayor of the Liverpool City Region, in an episode supporting the Stand Up To Cancer charity.

Badenoch told BBC Breakfast that she was surprised by Burnham's availability for the programme.

Even as a junior minister or as a secretary of state, I never had time to go on Gogglebox
she said, noting that
it takes hours to do
. The Conservative leader's comments came after Burnham was announced as part of the celebrity line-up for the charity special.

Burnham responded by emphasising his commitment to the cause and his leadership philosophy.

I'm proud to support Stand Up To Cancer. I make no apology for trying to lead with a bit of lightness and at times a bit of humour, that's the way I go at things
he told the BBC. The Prime Minister, who previously served as Greater Manchester mayor before entering Number 10 in July 2026, stressed that the appearance reflected his broader approach to governance.

It is always a moment in the annual calendar where we support Stand Up To Cancer through Gogglebox
Burnham said of the recurring charity special.
Steve and I are proud to do it. I'm trying to give the country a lift - trying to give the county some hope. That's always my approach and it's what I'm trying to do.
He acknowledged that the format might not appeal to everyone, but reiterated his personal commitment to cancer awareness campaigns.
It may not appeal to everybody when it comes to Gogglebox. It's Stand Up To Cancer night and I've always been somebody who puts my shoulder behind the fight against cancer.

What is Badenoch's concern?

Badenoch's criticism centred on the demands of high office rather than the charity itself.

What I'm amazed at is that Andy Burnham has got time to go on Gogglebox
she said.
When you get a new job in politics it's so difficult. There's so much to do and it's like drinking from a fire hose.
She drew on her own experience in ministerial roles to illustrate the time pressures involved.

The opposition leader expanded on her position, suggesting that Burnham's media activity was excessive for someone in his position.

Even as a junior minister or as a secretary of state I never had time to go on Gogglebox - I just don't know how he's got the time.
Describing Burnham as
on social media all day
, she argued that while she could pursue similar activities, doing so would compromise her ability to perform her role.
I wouldn't actually be able to do my job as leader of the opposition. My job is to hold him to account and I've seen a lot of prime ministers up close and I've never seen a prime minister have the time to do this much Goggleboxing, social media and Lad Bible.

Who else will appear on the special?

According to Channel 4's announcement, Burnham and Rotheram will be joined by the Sugababes and comedian Joe Lycett on the episode. Additional guests include Paul Whitehouse, Lenny Rush, Stanley Tucci and Felicity Blunt, according to reporting on the filming. The episode was recorded in the Downing Street flat after work hours, allowing Burnham to participate without disrupting his official schedule.

What is the Stand Up To Cancer campaign?

Stand Up To Cancer is a long-running charity initiative that has become a fixture in the British television calendar. The UK campaign launched in 2012 as a partnership between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, and has grown significantly since its inception. According to The National, the campaign has raised more than £127 million in the UK, funding 73 clinical trials and research projects involving over 13,000 cancer patients. The Gogglebox special has become an annual highlight of the campaign's fundraising efforts.

When will the episode air?

The celebrity edition of Gogglebox is scheduled to broadcast on Friday, 23 October 2026, at 9:05pm on Channel 4. Viewers will be able to watch Burnham and Rotheram react to television content alongside the other celebrity participants, with proceeds from the broadcast supporting cancer research and treatment initiatives across the UK.
