Two individuals have died and several others sustained injuries after a gunman opened fire in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The event took place in the southern Holosiivskyi district, as reported by Kyiv's police force on their Telegram channel.

Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko later confirmed that hostages were taken inside a supermarket. The attacker reportedly fired at police officers before being killed.

The precise number of casualties remains uncertain, but Klitschko stated that at least 10 people were transported to hospitals, including a child.

"At least 10 people had been taken to hospital, including a child," Klitschko said.
