R&B artist Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence after admitting to striking a man repeatedly with a tequila bottle during an altercation at an exclusive London venue. According to The Guardian, the 37-year-old was sentenced on Monday at Southwark Crown Court for the February 2023 incident at Tape, a private members' club in Mayfair. BBC News reported that Brown will not be imprisoned unless he commits another offence during the 12-month suspension period.

Brown admitted affray after the confrontation, which involved attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with what prosecutors described as a heavy, square-shaped tequila bottle. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, was also sentenced to four months imprisonment suspended for 12 months for his involvement in the assault. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.

During the hearing, the judge emphasised the severity of the incident.

The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous, it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained.
Judge Tony Baumgartner stated that
commercial success does not attract preferential treatment
in court proceedings, and added that
violence of this kind in a crowded nightclub is serious, it creates an obvious risk, not only to the person against whom it is directed, but also to others nearby.
According to BBC News, affray carries a maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.

What happened during the attack?

CCTV footage presented to the court showed Brown striking Diaw four times with the bottle, with two blows connecting to the left side of his head and another hitting his shoulder. The assault lasted approximately 20 seconds and occurred around 3am in the VIP area of the nightclub on 19 February 2023. Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC told the court that after Brown's initial strikes, he continued with

further blows
as the victim turned away. Akinlolu then grabbed Diaw in a bear hug, and Brown was subsequently seen throwing punches before being pulled away from the victim.

The victim, music producer Abe Diaw, received hospital treatment for head and knee injuries sustained during the confrontation. The nightclub was described as very small and packed at the time of the incident.

How did the case reach court?

Brown, who is from California, was arrested in May 2025 after returning to Britain. According to Reuters, he was released on bail after agreeing to a £5 million security payment, which allowed his tour to proceed. Earlier in the year, prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon after Brown pleaded guilty to affray.

During sentencing, Brown sat in the dock wearing a black leather jacket and looked at the floor for much of the hearing, which took place in front of a packed public gallery. The defence described Brown as a dedicated and loving father of four children who has lived a law-abiding life since his last conviction in 2013.

What was the defence argument?

Brown's defence lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, characterised the incident as

an ugly and unattractive incident
that was
very short-lived, lasting something more than 17 seconds but no more than 20.
The defence argued that the attack left no fractures or broken skin and there was an absence of serious injuries. Bennett-Jenkins told the court that Brown
offers a profound apology to all those present
at the club at the time of the attack.

Regarding Akinlolu's involvement, his lawyer Laurie-Anne Power KC told the court that he

genuinely believed
Brown was
under attack
when he joined the altercation. She described Brown as being like a
brother
to Akinlolu, and stated that while he became involved quickly, he accepted responsibility for his actions.

Judge Baumgartner noted Brown's guilty plea, compliance with bail conditions, and the impact a custodial sentence would have on Brown's children, stating that the singer's

risk of further offending is low.
