A former Thai member of parliament allegedly shot dead a local government official near Bangkok on 10 August 2026, then telephoned a political commentator during a live YouTube broadcast to admit what he had done. Chalong Riewrang, who once represented Nonthaburi in parliament, was later arrested and gave a lengthy account of the shooting to reporters at a police station.
The victim, identified by police as Thongchai Yenprasert, a retired police colonel and chief executive of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation, was struck in the neck outside his office and died in hospital. His driver was also wounded, hit in the arm and hand during the incident.
