Spotify has announced it will roll out a new "AI Persona" badge to flag artist profiles it believes are generated by artificial intelligence, with the label set to begin appearing from mid-September 2026. The company says the move is designed to give listeners "more transparency" about whether the artist behind a track is a real person, following complaints from fans who were unknowingly listening to AI-created acts presented as human musicians.

According to Spotify's own announcement, the badge will not be limited to artists who voluntarily disclose their AI status. It will also be applied to profiles the company identifies as photorealistic AI identities through its own review, with affected artists notified and given a chance to appeal the decision.

Spotify says the badge will surface in several places across the app, including the profile banner, the About section, search results, and on track rows within playlists, giving listeners several points of contact with the disclosure rather than a single hidden label.

Why is Spotify introducing this now?

Spotify says trust between fans and artists depends on listeners knowing who is genuinely behind the music they hear.

"true artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity"
"In music, that means listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are"
"That's more essential than ever in the age of generative AI."

The change follows repeated concern from listeners who felt misled after discovering that profiles they had assumed belonged to real performers were in fact AI constructs. One frustrated listener previously told Newsbeat he had built his own tool to automatically detect and block tracks he suspected were AI-generated after his playlists became increasingly filled with such material.

How will the badge actually work?

Artists carrying the AI Persona badge will be excluded from users' personalised recommendations unless the listener already follows them, according to Spotify. The company has clarified that the label concerns an artist's public identity rather than the production process itself, acknowledging that AI tools are already used at various stages of human-made music.

Listeners will be able to tap the badge to see whether the artist disclosed their AI status voluntarily or whether Spotify made that determination itself after a review, Spotify said in its announcement. Artists will also be able to share their AI Persona status through Spotify for Artists starting from the announcement date, and the company says it will let listeners report profiles they suspect represent undisclosed AI personas in the coming months.

Musicians can already flag AI involvement in how a track was made through Spotify's AI Credits feature, which the company says receives tens of thousands of submissions daily. Spotify says these disclosures use the industry-standard DDEX framework, allowing labels and distributors to specify whether AI was used for vocals, instrumentation, or post-production, and that it will begin displaying these credits across the app as partners submit them.

What do musicians make of the change?
