Oil Contamination Found on Herring Gulls in Peel

A number of herring gulls have been discovered coated in oil in the western region of the Isle of Man, raising alarm among conservation groups.

Thirteen birds were located around Mill Road in Peel, covered in an unidentified orange substance with a strong fish oil odor, according to Manx Wild Bird Aid. The organisation also reported sightings of many additional affected birds.

Recurring Issue Undermining Biosphere Status

The charity indicated that this problem has been ongoing in Peel since 2022, stating that it "makes a mockery of our biosphere status and gives a terrible impression of our island's attitude towards wildlife."

Department of Environment Investigates

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (Defra) acknowledged awareness of the reports and confirmed an investigation into the cause is underway.

The department emphasised the seriousness of the issue and expressed its commitment to helping prevent future incidents.

Rescue Efforts and Impact on Birds

Manx Wild Bird Aid reported that the 13 affected gulls had been captured and taken for cleaning. However, several other birds partially covered in oil were observed but could not be retrieved.

The charity warned of the lethal effects of the oil, explaining that it impairs the birds' ability to maintain body heat.

"When they go into the water they start getting waterlogged and become hypothermic,"

They added that the oil contamination could cause birds to sink and drown, and that the death of parent birds may result in starvation of their chicks.

Historical Context and Call to Action

Manx Wild Bird Aid noted that similar oil contamination incidents have occurred in Peel since 2022, including cases involving a peregrine falcon collected from the same area.

"We should be ashamed that this is happening to birds year after year and nothing is ever done,"

Defra has urged members of the public to report any birds found coated in oil to the organisation promptly.
