Trump Criticizes Bad Bunny's Historic Super Bowl Performance

Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of US politics. Former President Donald Trump has described Bad Bunny’s historic Super Bowl halftime show performance, which celebrated Latino heritage and culture, as “absolutely terrible” and “an affront to the Greatness of America.”

The Puerto Rican musician made history by becoming the first halftime show headliner to perform almost entirely in Spanish and to host a wedding during the show. The performance also featured appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, among others.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social published after the event, Trump wrote:

The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence.
Nobody understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children that are watching from throughout the U.S.A., and all over the World.
This “Show” is just a “slap in the face” to our Country, which is setting new standards and records every single day – including the Best Stock Market and 401(k)s in History!
There is nothing inspirational about this mess of a Halftime Show and watch, it will get great reviews from the Fake News Media, because they haven’t got a clue of what is going on in the REAL WORLD.

Sunday’s performance followed Bad Bunny’s album Debí Tirar Más Fotos becoming the first Spanish-language album to win the Grammy for Album of the Year, which increased anticipation for his Super Bowl appearance, a key event in the American cultural calendar.

The selection of the 31-year-old artist, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, was notable as he has been openly critical of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and of Trump’s administration’s immigration policies.

During the nearly 14-minute show, Bad Bunny shouted “God bless America!” and gave a roll call of countries from North, South, and Central America, including Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, the US, and Canada.

A colorful parade of flags from these nations marched through the sugar plantation fields that served as the energetic show’s centerpiece.

Ghislaine Maxwell to Plead Fifth Amendment in Upcoming Deposition, Lawmaker Says

In other news, Ghislaine Maxwell is expected to invoke the Fifth Amendment to avoid self-incrimination during her deposition before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee later today, according to a letter from Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna to the committee chair.

Maxwell was convicted in 2021 for her role in assisting Jeffrey Epstein in sexually abusing teenage girls and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.

Instead of answering individual questions, Maxwell plans to read a prepared statement at the start of her deposition, Khanna, who serves on the committee, stated without specifying his information source.

“This position appears inconsistent with Ms. Maxwell’s prior conduct, as she did not invoke the fifth amendment when she previously met with deputy attorney general Todd Blanche to discuss substantially similar subject matter,”

Khanna wrote in his letter seeking clarification on her testimony.

This development follows the Department of Justice’s release of millions of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, a well-connected financier who died by suicide in federal custody in New York in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

The House Oversight Committee is investigating Epstein’s connections to influential figures and the handling of information about his crimes.

Less Than 14% of ICE Arrestees in Trump’s First Year Back Had Violent Criminal Records

As referenced earlier, Puerto Rican megastar Bad Bunny used his platform earlier this month to criticize the surge in anti-immigration sentiment amid ICE operations that have caused fear in communities across the United States. So far in 2026, several individuals have died either at the hands of federal agents or while in ICE custody.

Recent data reveals that under 14% of nearly 400,000 immigrants arrested by ICE during Trump’s first year back in office had charges or convictions for violent criminal offenses, according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) document.

This information challenges the administration’s frequent claims that ICE operations primarily target illegal immigrants who are violent and pose a public safety threat.

According to the DHS report, nearly 60% of ICE arrestees over the past year had criminal charges or convictions, but most were for non-violent crimes.

This data adds context to the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement policies and their impact on immigrant communities.
