Derry marks 40 years of Europe's biggest Halloween with record ticket demand

More than 25,000 tickets for Derry's Awakening the Walled City Trail were claimed in three days as the city prepares to celebrate 40 years of Europe's biggest Halloween festival. The ticketing system, introduced for the first time, helps manage crowds on the historic 400-year-old city walls.

Tens of thousands of free tickets have been claimed within three days by visitors eager to celebrate the 40th anniversary of what organisers describe as Europe's largest Halloween festival. The ticketing system for the Awakening the Walled City Trail—a centrepiece attraction staged on Derry's historic city walls—opened at noon on Monday, and more than 25,000 of the 36,750 available slots were booked by Wednesday, according to Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Londonderry's Halloween celebration has expanded dramatically since the official civic festival launched in 1986. Last year, the event drew more than 100,000 visitors to the city during the Halloween period. For 2026, the council has introduced a ticketing system for the first time to manage crowd numbers on the walls, which date back over 400 years and were not originally designed to accommodate large-scale events.

Aisling McCallion, festival and events manager for the council, explained the rationale behind the new arrangement.

In the rest of the walled city everything will be free, non-ticketed, so people can travel around and see everything. This is only for the section on the walls and that's just to control the numbers to make it a safer experience, a more enjoyable experience.
She added:
The walls are over 400 years old so they weren't really built for large-scale events so we're just trying to make that as an enjoyable experience as possible.

Councillors approved the ticketing system earlier this year following concerns about crowd management at previous festivals. The Awakening the Walled City Trail operates during the first three days of the festival, with ticket slots allocated between 6pm and 8.30pm, with relaxed performances available at 6pm each night. The council has reserved additional tickets to be released daily during the festival period.

What is the 40th anniversary programme?

The full 2026 programme has been launched with the anniversary theme "It's In Our Bones" and a specially commissioned spectacle, Samhain Sisters, among the headline attractions. The programme launch also included the unveiling of a mural marking four decades since the festival began in 1986. The trail itself promises an

Derry mayor Grace Uí Niallais commented:

The Awakening the Walled City Trail perfectly captures the creativity and rich cultural heritage that have made our festival internationally renowned.

How did Derry become a Halloween destination?

The city's Halloween celebrations are rooted in more than 2,000 years of Samhain tradition and shaped by four decades of community celebration, according to the council. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "Sow-in") marked the end of harvest time and was believed to be when the boundary between the living and the dead grew thinnest, allowing spirits to walk the earth.

The modern story of Derry's Halloween prominence began in the 1980s in a city centre pub, where a publican encouraged patrons to arrive in fancy dress to boost trade on Halloween night. The strategy succeeded unexpectedly: the bar and surrounding street filled with cavemen, multiple versions of the Hulk, Ronald Reagans, and Margaret Thatchers. This spontaneous celebration led to the launch of official civic festivities in 1986, which have since grown into an internationally recognised event.

When is the festival taking place?

The festival is scheduled to run from 28 October to 1 November 2026, with the Awakening the Walled City Trail running from 6pm to 9pm on 28–30 October. The Halloween parade is scheduled for 7pm on 31 October, followed by fireworks at 8.15pm.

How can visitors book tickets?

Festival tickets for the Awakening the Walled City Trail can be booked at the city's Millennium Forum, both at its box office and via its website. The council has confirmed that a number of tickets will be held back and made available for booking on each day of the festival itself, ensuring access for those unable to secure slots in advance.
