SSE Airtricity, which supplies natural gas to Northern Ireland's largest customer base, will implement a price increase of nearly 19% beginning 1 October, affecting approximately 200,000 domestic and small business accounts across the region.
Households in the greater Belfast and west gas network areas will see their typical annual gas bills rise by approximately £172 as a result of the adjustment.
The utility company attributed the increase to what it described as unprecedented volatility affecting global energy markets, combined with elevated wholesale gas prices that suppliers must pay to source fuel.
This announcement follows a pattern of energy price movements in Northern Ireland. In February 2026, SSE Airtricity had reduced gas prices by 8.1% from 1 April, providing relief to its then-215,000 customers. However, market conditions have shifted dramatically since that reduction took effect. The company also increased electricity charges by over £70 annually from 1 August 2026, citing comparable wholesale cost pressures.
What is driving energy costs higher?
Global wholesale gas prices have roughly doubled since military operations began between the US and Israel against Iran, creating significant uncertainty in energy markets. This geopolitical tension has rippled through supply chains and pricing mechanisms across Europe and the UK.
The broader energy sector in Northern Ireland has experienced substantial cost increases. Home heating oil prices surged by more than £100 amid Middle East tensions, affecting nearly two-thirds of households that rely on oil for heating. Meanwhile, Budget Energy announced a 9.5% price rise for variable tariff customers from 4 August, signalling that SSE Airtricity's increase reflects sector-wide pressures rather than company-specific factors.
