NFL owners have unanimously approved the $9.612bn acquisition of the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks by a group led by billionaire Vinod Khosla, marking the second-highest franchise purchase price in North American sports history. According to reporting on the ownership vote, the decision came on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, after the league's finance and ownership policy committees had already recommended approval.

The estate of Paul G. Allen, the late Microsoft co-founder who owned the team until his death in 2018, reached terms with the Khosla family on 11 July following a formal search for a successor. The transaction is expected to close in September, before the Seahawks' season opener against the New England Patriots on 9 September—the same opponent they defeated in February's Super Bowl championship game.

The purchase price surpasses the $6.05bn paid for the Washington Commanders in 2023, though it remains below more recent major sports acquisitions. The NBA's Los Angeles Lakers sold for $10bn in 2025 and are currently undergoing another ownership change for a reported $12.5bn.

Khosla, 71, co-founded the technology company Sun Microsystems and established the venture capital firm Khosla Ventures. According to Forbes, his net worth stands at $13.2bn. As part of the agreement to acquire the Seahawks, he will be required to divest his minority ownership stake in the San Francisco 49ers.

What does Khosla plan to do with the franchise?

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Khosla outlined a strategy centred on maintaining the team's winning tradition.

We are honoured to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. How often do you get to buy a franchise that just won the Super Bowl? We are incredibly lucky and humbled by this gift, I would say, from the Allen trust.

He emphasised a long-term outlook rather than short-term gains.

The task ahead is actually pretty simple—keep the winning streak alive, get another Super Bowl. Our approach is generally going to be long-term focused, that's our inclination always. So, keep winning, take a long-term approach, and learn a lot. We don't know enough, and the other owners have been incredibly welcoming and willing to teach us, so we'll learn a lot. We'll learn from management and see what they are recommending.

Khosla added that he intends to build on the legacy created by the previous ownership.

We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organisation and fans everywhere.

How did the Seahawks reach this point?

Paul Allen purchased the Seahawks from Ken Behring in 1997, preventing the franchise from relocating to Southern California. Following Allen's death in 2018, his sister Jody Allen assumed control of both the Seahawks and the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers as chair of each organisation. She operated under a directive to eventually sell both teams and donate the proceeds to charitable causes.

During the 29 seasons under Paul or Jody Allen's stewardship, the Seahawks qualified for the play-offs 17 times and won two of the four Super Bowls they contested. The team's recent Super Bowl victory in February 2026 demonstrated the strength of the franchise at the time of sale.

What was the approval process?

The sale required support from at least 24 of the NFL's 32 owners to proceed. According to reporting on the committee recommendations, both the league's finance committee and ownership policy committee had unanimously endorsed the transaction before the full ownership vote took place. The unanimous approval by all owners on 26 August exceeded the minimum threshold required.

The Paul G. Allen estate had engaged Allen & Company and Latham & Watkins to manage the sale process, which the estate indicated would extend through the 2026 offseason.
