A semi-professional Welsh football club experienced an unexpected surge in merchandise sales after their kit was worn during a headline performance at Reading Festival on 28 August 2026.
Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten performed the Irish band's set while sporting Cwmbran Celtic's green and white-striped away shirt, which features Scottish post-rock band Mogwai as its sponsor. The unplanned exposure led to pre-orders for the garment nearly doubling in the days following the festival appearance.
Club officials said they had not anticipated the moment. Matt Jarrett, joint commercial manager for Cwmbran Celtic, explained that a friend of the club who worked as monitor engineer for Fontaines D.C. facilitated the arrangement. "In all honesty, we thought we'll give it to him. It'll be nice for him to have it. Maybe he will wear it backstage or something," Jarrett recalled. "We were as surprised as anyone when we saw him walking out on stage with the shirt on."
The club released a statement on social media expressing their gratitude. "We're still in shock and can't thank Grian enough for the support," they wrote. In recognition of Chatten's endorsement, the club announced it would offer him a lifetime season ticket.
How did this boost the club's finances?
The exposure generated immediate commercial impact. Jarrett reported that merchandise pre-orders had surged substantially following the festival broadcast. "The Fontaines fans have gone crazy over it," he said. The shirts are available in men's, women's and children's sizes through Tor Sports, with a portion of revenue directed toward supporting independent music venues.

What is the club's broader music partnership?
Cwmbran Celtic's kit initiative extends beyond this single collaboration. For the 2026/27 season, the club has partnered with four bands to feature on their team shirts: Welsh acts Super Furry Animals and Panic Shack, alongside Scottish group Mogwai and English band Loose Articles. This arrangement represents a revival of a tradition in which musicians sponsor football clubs, blending two cultural spheres.
The shirt sales serve a dual purpose: supporting the club's operations while also benefiting grassroots music infrastructure. Ten percent of every shirt sale is directed to Music Venues Trust, an organisation advocating for independent venues facing financial pressures.
What did Chatten say about his involvement?
In a statement, Chatten expressed genuine enthusiasm for the club's mission.
I love Cwmbran and I love initiatives that support independent venues. Cwmbran Celtic is a club run by volunteers who have a sense of solidarity with the plight independent music venues are facing. I think that's class. Also I love Mogwai.
Jarrett, who also operates a record store in Newport, described the aftermath as overwhelming. "It had been crazy ever since, after festival-goers and viewers shared photos and videos of the band's performance," he said. The moment reached audiences far beyond those physically present at the festival, with television broadcasts and online coverage amplifying the exposure.
What happens next for the club?
The band-sponsored kits are scheduled for use during Cwmbran Celtic's 2026/27 campaign, marking the first season in which the partnership will feature prominently in competitive matches. The unexpected visibility from Reading Festival has already generated momentum ahead of that launch, with merchandise demand demonstrating substantial public interest in the initiative.
The club's volunteer-led operation has successfully leveraged the collaboration to raise awareness both for their own operations and for the broader cause of supporting independent music venues across Wales and beyond.
