Netflix cuts 1,000 jobs globally in largest layoff since 2022

Netflix announced it will eliminate 1,000 positions worldwide as the streaming platform contends with intensifying competition and slowing growth. The reduction represents approximately 6% of the company's workforce and marks the steepest round of cuts since 2022. Human resources, legal, product and technology divisions will bear the brunt of the layoffs, with managers expected to notify affected employees shortly.

The decision comes as Netflix grapples with market pressures that have constrained its expansion trajectory. During remarks at the Bloomberg Screentime summit last month, co-chief executive Ted Sarandos acknowledged that the company was

"not growing as fast as I want us to"
. According to reporting on the announcement, Netflix had already been preparing for a major round of cuts, with indications as early as October 1 that as many as 1,000 jobs could be affected.

The streaming industry is undergoing significant consolidation. Paramount's $110 billion merger with Warner Bros, owner of HBO, reshaped the competitive landscape, while free platforms including YouTube and TikTok continue drawing substantial audiences away from subscription services. Netflix itself had pursued a deal with Warner Bros but was ultimately outbid by Paramount.

In a message to staff, Sarandos and co-chief executive Greg Peters framed the restructuring as necessary to maintain focus. They stated that

"Our mission - to entertain the world - is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritise our people and resources."
The executives also pledged that Netflix would
"continue to invest aggressively in high-impact areas to improve our service and further drive growth and innovation"
.

How does this compare to previous cuts?

The 2022 layoff round, which eliminated approximately 450 positions, followed Netflix's first r loss in more than a decade. According to available reporting, that earlier decline involved a loss of 200,000 rs in the first quarter of 2022. The current cuts are substantially larger in absolute terms, though they affect a proportionally similar share of the workforce given Netflix's growth since then. The company had approximately 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, meaning the 1,000-job reduction represents a meaningful reduction in headcount.

Earlier in 2026, Netflix had already made smaller reductions, including letting go several dozen members of its global product team, signalling that cost pressures had been mounting throughout the year.

What is driving the financial pressure?

Netflix's recent financial performance has disappointed investors and analysts. According to market analysis, the company's second-quarter 2026 earnings aligned with Wall Street expectations, but third-quarter revenue guidance fell below analyst forecasts, weighing on its stock price. Investors have increasingly focused on user engagement metrics—the amount of time customers spend on the platform—as Netflix competes with YouTube, TikTok and other entertainment options.

Ross Benes, senior analyst at eMarketer, highlighted a structural challenge facing the company. He observed that

"they haven't been able to find another line of major revenue"
and noted that
"the company remains reliant on a subscription business that could be approaching a plateau."
Benes added that
"Eventually, because they're nearing a ceiling with that, they'll need another revenue stream to diversify, and that's where it's been more of a struggle."

What new revenue initiatives is Netflix pursuing?

Netflix has continued commissioning original content, with the underwater mystery series "Below," starring Josh Hartnett, currently among its most popular offerings. Beyond traditional programming, the company has pursued diversification through gaming services and an advertising-supported tier that allows advertisements to play before and during shows and films. These initiatives represent attempts to generate revenue beyond the core subscription model, though their contribution to overall earnings remains limited.

What comes next?

Netflix stated in its staff communication that the firm remains on track to meet its financial forecasts. The company is scheduled to report third-quarter 2026 earnings on October 20, after the market closes, providing the next opportunity for investors to assess whether the cost-cutting measures and strategic initiatives are yielding results.
