Three major retailers have been hit with combined penalties totalling £6 million by the UK's competition regulator after investigations found they misled shoppers through deceptive pricing and promotional practices.

The Competition Markets Authority (CMA) determined that Wayfair, the online furniture seller, engaged in misleading sales tactics and imposed a fine of £4.8 million. Appliances Direct, an electronics retailer, received a separate penalty of £1.2 million for similar breaches involving false time-limited offers designed to create artificial urgency among consumers.

In a third enforcement action, Gold's Gym was fined £48,000 after the regulator found the fitness chain failed to disclose the complete cost of gym memberships to potential customers before they committed to purchases.

What compensation will customers receive?

Two of the three companies have been ordered to compensate affected customers. Appliances Direct and Gold's Gym must issue refunds totalling £440,000 to shoppers who were harmed by the misleading practices. Wayfair has not been ordered to issue refunds as part of its enforcement settlement.

What do these findings reveal?

The cases highlight ongoing concerns about online retail practices and the tactics some major e-commerce platforms use to drive sales. The CMA's enforcement action demonstrates the regulator's commitment to protecting consumers from deceptive pricing strategies, particularly those involving false scarcity claims and incomplete pricing information.

All three companies have been contacted for their responses to the enforcement actions.
