John Pye, who co-founded the auction business that became John Pye Auctions, has died at the age of 95. The company confirmed his death on Tuesday, 19 August 2025, describing it as a moment of "great sadness" for the firm and the wider Pye family.
John Pye and his wife Ann established the business in 1968, initially trading as "Furniture & General Auctions" from Nottingham's old Cattle Market site. According to the company's corporate history, the pair began trading under that name at the same location, confirming the founding date given by the firm.
A statement from the company said John Pye had lived a life defined by hard work and humour, and that his influence on the business would endure.

How did the business grow from its early years?
For its first two decades, the company focused on probate house clearances, the disposal of business assets following closures, and the sale of private chattels. In 1990 it was formally incorporated as John Pye & Sons Limited and relocated to larger premises at Banton House on Meadow Lane, close to Notts County's stadium, allowing it to broaden its client base across the East Midlands.
