Train Disruptions at Leamington Spa Due to Heatwave
Train services at Leamington Spa station are experiencing cancellations and delays amid extreme heat conditions.
West Midlands Railway (WMR) has suspended services between Coventry and Leamington Spa following a rail buckling incident caused by the high temperatures in Leamington.
Trains calling at Leamington Spa are also facing delays or cancellations due to the defective track. Services heading towards London are operating at reduced speeds as a safety measure.
The disruption is expected to continue until 20:00 BST, impacting Chiltern Railways routes connecting London, Stourbridge, Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Banbury.
Additionally, CrossCountry and West Midlands Railway routes passing through Nuneaton and Worcester are affected.
Impact on Services and Safety Measures
WMR explained that extreme heat causing rails to expand and buckle is not unusual. When temperatures reach certain thresholds, trains must reduce speed to maintain safety.
The company has urged passengers to travel only if necessary and announced it will operate a reduced timetable on Friday to ensure safe service operation.
Routes with reduced service levels on Thursday and Friday include:
- Cross City Line - Lichfield to Redditch / Bromsgrove via Birmingham
- Rugeley Trent Valley to Birmingham International
- Wolverhampton to Walsall via Birmingham
- Camp Hill Line - Birmingham New Street to Kings Norton
- Snow Hill Lines - Worcester stations to Stratford-upon-Avon via Birmingham
Official Statements and Passenger Advice
Jonny Wiseman, WMR customer experience and commercial director, said: "With the ongoing heatwave continuing to cause significant disruption to rail services, we are again asking our customers to only travel on Friday if their journey is essential."
"Customers holding tickets for travel can use them on any day up until next Tuesday, or return them to their place of purchase for a full refund."
Earlier in the week, Network Rail requested passengers to travel only if necessary. This appeal has been extended through Friday due to sustained high temperatures.
Denise Wetton, Network Rail's Central route director, stated: "While all railway lines will remain open, running fewer trains will help us manage the impact of the hot weather and keep passengers and colleagues safe."
"We strongly advise customers to think carefully about their plans and only travel if it's absolutely necessary in the areas most affected by the highest temperatures."
"If you do need to travel, please allow extra time, carry water to stay hydrated and be prepared for services to be busier than usual."
Effects of Heat on Railway Infrastructure
Network Rail added that extreme heat can affect tracks, power, and signalling systems.
On a day with temperatures around 30°C, steel tracks can reach over 50°C at ground level, causing rails to expand, overhead lines to sag, and potentially leading to infrastructure failures.
