Rafael Camara will make his Formula 1 debut with the US-based Haas team in 2027 after impressing during an extensive driver evaluation process. The 21-year-old Brazilian, currently leading the Formula 2 championship in his rookie season, has signed a multi-year contract that completes Haas's driver line-up alongside Briton Oliver Bearman.
Camara emerged as the preferred candidate following assessments of four drivers conducted over multiple test sessions. He was selected ahead of reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and Haas reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa. Three of the candidates—Camara, Fornaroli and Hirakawa—underwent evaluation at Portugal's Portimao circuit in August, while Doohan was assessed separately in previous test sessions.
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu highlighted Camara's composure and adaptability during the selection process.
"I'm really excited to sign such a young, amazing talent like Rafael Camara,"Komatsu said.
"He showed when we had him drive in our programme in Portugal that he could handle himself very well with not a huge amount of time to learn the car. He showed us more than just raw speed. Rafa managed to create an environment to get the best out of himself, it was very impressive and certainly the laps he completed were special."
What makes Camara's rise significant?
Camara's promotion marks a major milestone for Brazilian motorsport. According to reports on his signing, his arrival will give Brazil two full-time Formula 1 drivers in 2027 for the first time since 2016, with Gabriel Bortoleto competing for Audi.
The Brazilian has demonstrated consistent progression through the junior categories. He won the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship before capturing the 2025 Formula 3 title, establishing himself as one of motorsport's most promising young talents. In his current F2 campaign, Camara has recorded three Feature Race victories and four additional podium finishes, giving him a seven-point championship lead over rival Nikola Tsolov.
How does Camara fit into Haas's plans?
Both Camara and Bearman are members of the Ferrari driver academy, strengthening the relationship between the Maranello-based manufacturer and the American team. Frenchman Esteban Ocon will depart Haas at the end of the current season after two campaigns alongside Bearman. While Haas has not formally announced Bearman's retention, the team principal indicated confirmation is expected very soon.
Camara expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity ahead.
"It's an important step in my career and I want to thank Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for the trust they have placed in me,"he said.
"Now my focus is on preparing myself in the best possible way for this new challenge. There will be a lot to learn, and I'm looking forward to working closely with the team, understanding the car and continuing to develop as a driver."
What preparation lies ahead?
Before his full-time debut, Camara is expected to gain valuable track experience through Friday practice sessions during the remainder of 2026. These outings will include an appearance at his home Brazilian Grand Prix in early November, allowing him to acclimate to Formula 1 machinery and procedures before the 2027 season begins.
