Wrexham forward Sam Smith will miss a substantial period of action following a knee injury sustained during the club's 1-0 Championship defeat to Sheffield United on Friday, manager Phil Parkinson has announced. The 28-year-old, who arrived at the club from Reading in January 2025, is scheduled to consult a specialist on Tuesday to determine the severity of the damage and likely recovery timeline. According to BBC Sport, Parkinson indicated that surgery may be required.
Smith came on at half-time against Sheffield United and needed treatment during the match, but completed the fixture, according to the Leader Live. His condition deteriorated overnight, with significant swelling developing the following day.
"Unfortunately for... it looks like he's going to face a significant period on the sidelines,"Parkinson said.
"He came off against Sheffield and went back and carried on and his knee swelled up significantly the next day. He sees a specialist this afternoon (Tuesday) and we will know more then. Our initial thoughts are that he could need surgery, but we'll know more after today."
What does this mean for Wrexham's squad?
Smith's injury compounds existing fitness problems at the club ahead of Wednesday's home fixture against Championship leaders Middlesbrough, scheduled for 19:45 GMT. Forwards Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead remain sidelined, while midfielder Callum O'Hare was absent from the Sheffield United match. This injury crisis mirrors earlier challenges the club has faced this season, as midfielder Ben Sheaf previously faced a season-ending knee injury sustained against Ipswich Town.
Who will step up in Smith's absence?
Parkinson sees the injury as an opportunity for younger players to demonstrate their capabilities. Bailey Cadamarteri, a 21-year-old Jamaica international who joined from Sheffield Wednesday in January, is expected to receive increased playing time. The forward has made five appearances this season, all coming from the substitute's bench, and has yet to start a senior match for the club.
"That's what happens in football clubs, people come out of the side and other people say, 'this is my chance to step up to the plate and show what I'm all about',"Parkinson explained.
"Undoubtedly Bailey's going to get some game time and I'm looking forward to seeing that. Bailey's ready and chomping at the bit and with Sam's injury he's going to get an opportunity and more game time. He's trained well and he's ready."
What is Wrexham's current situation?
Wrexham finished seventh last season after a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough on the final day left them outside the play-offs, according to Yahoo Sports. The club now faces the same opponent in a fixture that carries significant implications for their promotion ambitions this term. The accumulation of injuries to key attacking players represents a substantial challenge for Parkinson as he seeks to maintain momentum in the Championship.
What happens next?
Wrexham will host Wolverhampton Wanderers on 7 November at 12:30 p.m., according to ESPN. The specialist assessment scheduled for Tuesday will clarify Smith's recovery prospects and help Parkinson plan his squad rotation for the demanding fixture schedule ahead.
