Jesus de Miguel, a 30-year-old striker for Tenerife, has experienced a significant deterioration in his medical condition following a severe collision during a Spanish second division match on Monday. According to BBC Sport, the incident occurred during the home fixture against Andorra when De Miguel sustained head and chest injuries after colliding with opposing goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who was subsequently sent off for the challenge.
Spanish media outlets including Marca reported that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest in an ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics during transport to hospital. Tenerife's initial statement on Monday indicated the player remained stable despite the gravity of his injuries, but a club update released in the early hours of Tuesday morning revealed that his condition had worsened neurologically. According to Yahoo Sports, the club stated it would release additional information in the coming hours.
The collision occurred in the 97th minute of the match, seven minutes into stoppage time, when the score remained level at 2-2. Owono had advanced toward the centre circle to intercept a long ball when his knee made contact with De Miguel. The striker immediately fell motionless on the pitch as medical personnel provided immediate treatment before transferring him by ambulance from Tenerife's Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez to hospital.
De Miguel was admitted to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where medical staff continue to monitor his condition closely.
Reaction from Players and Officials
Both teams' players displayed visible emotional distress at the incident, with several of De Miguel's teammates visibly upset on the pitch. The referee immediately showed Owono a straight red card and subsequently abandoned the match, with no result declared. According to The Athletic, Andorra remained in 20th place and Tenerife in 14th in the league standings following the abandoned fixture.
Andorra released a statement expressing their concern for De Miguel's wellbeing:
We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today's match. We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife.
