Manchester United's technical hierarchy is actively exploring managerial alternatives as scrutiny intensifies on Michael Carrick following a poor run of results. According to BBC Sport, technical director Jason Wilcox has identified several high-profile candidates, with former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe emerging as a preferred option should the club decide to make a change.

The club's interest in potential replacements comes after United lost 4–1 to Como on 21 October, extending their winless run and intensifying scrutiny of the manager's position. United had won just two of their first 11 matches of the 2026/27 season, according to reports published on 22 October.

Despite the speculation, Carrick was expected to remain in charge for Sunday's Bournemouth match on 25 October, having not been told of an imminent change.

Who are the leading candidates?

Eddie Howe stands out as Wilcox's favoured choice. The former Newcastle boss departed St James' Park in August after nearly five years in charge, during which he secured Champions League qualification on two occasions and won the 2025 Carabao Cup. His experience managing a top-flight club and track record of improvement make him an attractive proposition for the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Julian Nagelsmann is also under consideration. The former Bayern Munich and Germany manager has expressed enthusiasm about the Manchester United role, according to reports. His pedigree at elite European clubs and international level represents another high-calibre option.

Unai Emery, the current Aston Villa manager, features among United's dream candidates to replace Carrick. Emery has established himself as one of Europe's most successful managers in recent years, though any approach would face significant obstacles given his current position.

Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager, has also been approached. Reports indicate that United have opened talks with the Italian about the possibility of returning to the Premier League, though his availability and interest remain uncertain.

Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton's German manager, has also been linked with the vacancy. However, sources suggest that Hurzeler would not be interested in the Manchester United job if it became available, despite the club's potential willingness to pay a world record managerial fee to secure his services.

What are Arsenal's transfer priorities?

Arsenal are pursuing their own managerial and squad objectives in the transfer market. The club is targeting a potential move for Atletico Madrid and Spain's World Cup-winning winger Alex Baena, 25, in the January window. The Spanish international would represent a significant addition to Mikel Arteta's attacking options.

The Gunners are also monitoring Monza striker Gustavo Varela, 21, with Napoli and Benfica also expressing interest in the Portuguese player. Varela's potential availability has attracted attention from multiple top European clubs.

Which other players are attracting interest?

Brazil defender Gleison Bremer is wanted by Bayer Leverkusen, with the 29-year-old potentially available to leave Juventus in January. Bremer is contracted to the Turin club until 2029 and reportedly earns €6 million per season including bonuses, though his departure would require a substantial transfer fee.

When will the transfer window open?

The winter transfer window is expected to open on 2 January 2027, though Italian clubs have reportedly sought an earlier opening on 28 December 2026. This timing will be crucial for clubs pursuing January reinforcements, including those seeking to strengthen their squads or address managerial changes.
