TNT Sports is on the verge of securing live UK broadcasting rights for England's white ball tour of Australia next month, with negotiations that could result in at least one match being shown free-to-air on Channel 5.

According to The Guardian, Channel 5 is in advanced discussions with Cricket Australia regarding a highlights package for the eight-match tour. The terrestrial broadcaster is also negotiating to acquire live rights to one of the five T20 internationals in the series.

Channel 5 currently holds live rights to two men's and two women's T20 internationals each summer as part of a four-year agreement that commenced this year, though the broadcaster has not previously transmitted an England match from overseas.

Which match could be broadcast free-to-air?

The opening T20 international of the five-match sequence, scheduled for the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 21 November, represents the match of greatest appeal to Channel 5. The 8.15am Saturday morning start time in the UK is anticipated to generate the largest domestic audience for the broadcaster.

Should the arrangement be finalised, it would mark the first occasion since Channel 4 broadcast a Test series from India in 2021 during the final Covid-19 lockdown that an England overseas fixture has been shown free-to-air on terrestrial television.

Why is TNT Sports bidding for white ball rights?

TNT Sports has held the rights to England's last three Ashes series in Australia, making their decision to pursue this white ball tour unsurprising given the competition for the rights. Sky Sports and Dazn also expressed interest in acquiring the broadcasting package.

Channel 5's participation in the negotiations represents a notable development, particularly given that both the terrestrial broadcaster and TNT Sports are subsidiaries of US media conglomerate Paramount Skydance. This arrangement raises the possibility of increased collaboration between the two organisations over future sports rights acquisitions. Channel 5 previously secured a highlights deal for the Commonwealth Games held in the UK last summer, with the event broadcast exclusively live on TNT Sports.

What is the broader context for cricket broadcasting rights?

The value of overseas cricket rights has declined in recent years, resulting in most of England's winter tours being sold only in the final stages before departure. Sky Sports has acquired the rights for England's Test series in South Africa over Christmas and is broadcasting the ongoing tri-series in Pakistan, but the broadcaster has moved away from committing to long-term agreements with overseas cricket boards.

The ECB has been pursuing expanded free-to-air cricket coverage from 2029, with Sky potentially sharing rights with ITV, marking a significant shift in how domestic cricket is distributed to audiences.

Who will lead England on the tour?

Harry Brook has been named captain of both the ODI and T20I squads for the tour. The squad will include returning players Jacob Bethell and Jofra Archer, with Bethell making his comeback from injury.

The opening T20 will hold particular significance for England, as it will be their first T20 international at the MCG since winning the 2022 Men's T20 World Cup final at the same venue against Pakistan.

What is the tour schedule?

Brendon McCullum's white-ball squad will depart for Australia at the beginning of next month following a brief return home after the conclusion of the ongoing one-day international tri-series in Pakistan. England are currently struggling to reach the final of that competition.

Following criticism of their preparation for last winter's Ashes series, the England and Wales Cricket Board has arranged a 50-over warm-up fixture against a Western Australia XI at Perth's WACA Ground on 7 November at 11.30am local time.

The three-match ODI series commences at Perth Stadium on 13 November, with subsequent matches scheduled for Adelaide on 15 November and Hobart on 18 November. The five-match T20 sequence begins at the MCG on 21 November and concludes in Canberra on 2 December.

What happens next with the broadcasting deal?

TNT Sports declined to comment on the negotiations, though Cricket Australia is understood to be confident that the agreement will be finalised. The finer details of the arrangement remain under discussion between the parties involved.
