A 27-year-old woman has been charged following the shooting of a police officer in Nottingham city centre on 18 October 2026. According to BBC News, the male officer was approached two suspects at a bus stop in Angel Row shortly before 04:50 BST on Sunday when the incident occurred.
The officer remains in hospital receiving treatment for injuries that have been described as serious but not life-threatening. The police and crime commissioner noted the injuries could be life-altering, though the officer is in a stable condition. Members of the public at the scene provided assistance to the wounded officer before emergency services arrived.
Aisha Zaman, of Collison Street, Hyson Green, faces two charges: possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence. The charges were brought on Friday following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service. Zaman has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Friday.
Who else has been arrested?
Multiple individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Additionally, a 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender. Both remain in police custody.
What is the investigation status?
Detective Chief Superintendent Rich Bull, who is leading the investigation, expressed gratitude for the community response.
We would just like to take this moment to thank the public. We continue to support him as he undergoes further treatment in hospital and keeping him and his family fully informed of the developments in this investigation.
Bull said officers were continuing to follow multiple lines of inquiry. Police have deployed substantial resources until those responsible are identified and brought to justice. The detective praised the actions of members of the public who intervened to help the wounded officer. Anyone with information has been asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police.
Is Nottingham experiencing a return to gang violence?
The incident has drawn attention to Nottingham's history of high-profile shootings and gang-related violence. The city acquired the nickname "Shottingham" during the early 2000s due to postcode rivalries and gang activity. However, Bull indicated he did not believe Nottingham was returning to that period of violence, despite the serious nature of this incident.
