Firefighters responded to a vehicle blaze in the car park of a Tesco Extra store on Maryhill Road in Glasgow on the afternoon of the incident. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) dispatched two fire engines to the scene at approximately 16:20. Social media footage captured a black car fully engulfed in flames positioned in the corner of the covered parking structure, situated beneath the supermarket floor level.
The supermarket was evacuated as a precautionary measure following the outbreak. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
Thick plumes of black smoke billowed through the car park and extended onto Maryhill Road, creating a visible hazard across the surrounding area. The intensity of the blaze and resulting smoke prompted the swift response from emergency services and the decision to clear the building.
Vehicle fires at shopping centres are not uncommon in the Glasgow area. A previous incident in June saw a car deliberately set alight following a street altercation in Glasgow, highlighting the range of circumstances that can lead to such emergencies at retail locations.
Tesco was contacted for a statement regarding the incident and any measures taken to support customers and staff affected by the evacuation.
