West Mercia Police initially detained five individuals on suspicion of murder in connection with the stabbing. The force subsequently announced that three of those arrested would not face any further charges, leaving only the two men charged with the fatal crime.

This incident reflects a broader pattern of serious violence affecting students in the region. A similar case in Bristol saw a student charged with murdering his housemate through multiple stab wounds, highlighting the recurring nature of such tragic events in university communities.

Kumar's family has expressed their wish to have his body returned to India, underscoring the international dimensions of this tragedy. Those who knew him have described him as someone who lived with purpose and dedication to his studies.
