Teenager fatally stabbed through heart in frenzied zombie knife attack

Four defendants face murder charges in connection with the death of Tristan Kerr, 17, who was fatally stabbed with a zombie knife. Prosecutors allege all four played coordinated roles in the attack through joint enterprise, though all deny the charge.

A 17-year-old boy bled to death in the street after suffering a catastrophic stab wound from a zombie knife during a violent assault, Newport Crown Court has heard. Tristan Kerr, from Abertridwr in Caerphilly, died at the scene following the attack on Lower Francis Street in February. Four defendants—Georgie Mears, 19, Connor Palfrey, 24, Ricardo Elliot, 27, and Elexi Manny, 24—face murder charges through joint enterprise, though all deny the allegation.

The prosecution alleges that Mears, from Thornhill in Cardiff, carried out the fatal stabbing while the other three played supporting roles in what prosecutors describe as a coordinated attack. The trial began at Newport Crown Court on 6 October, with all four defendants having previously pleaded not guilty at an earlier hearing.

A post-mortem examination revealed a stab wound measuring 13.5 centimetres (5.3 inches) that penetrated Kerr's heart and lung. Witnesses reported seeing him collapse into the arms of a friend, telling him:

I'm hurting. My side - I love you bro. You're a good 'un you are.

What was the sequence of events?

The attack unfolded rapidly at a house where Kerr had gone to play Fortnite and use cannabis with friends. The four defendants arrived at the property in Abertridwr shortly after 17:30 on the day of the incident, transported in Manny's Volkswagen Polo. Prosecutor Michael Jones KC told the jury that the fatal assault lasted less than two minutes.

Mears entered the house armed with a zombie knife approximately 10 inches long, curved with holes, and coloured purple and silver. He greeted those present with

alright boys
, a remark apparently directed at Kerr, while repeatedly asking
What you want?
as he brandished the weapon. Witness Connor Davies described seeing Mears
stabbing and swinging out
at Kerr, who attempted to defend himself before the blade penetrated his coat.

Palfrey followed Mears into the house carrying a wooden stick, which one witness believed might have contained a nail. Around 40 minutes before the attack, Palfrey had switched off his mobile telephone. During the assault, he stood watching while holding the stick above his head, warning others in the living room:

Stay away, let them have it out.
Elliot remained in the hallway acting as a lookout.

What is the prosecution's case on joint enterprise?

Prosecutors argue that although Mears delivered the fatal blow, all four defendants share responsibility through their coordinated actions. Jones told the jury that Palfrey's conduct—holding the wooden stick aloft and issuing warnings—positioned him as the controlling figure, described as

the foreman stopping Kerr's friends getting involved
. The prosecutor stated:
Tristan Kerr died at the scene as a consequence of that attack and that fatal blow deliberately inflicted on him. Although that fatal blow was delivered by Georgie Mears, all four of them bear the joint responsibility for, and are therefore guilty of his murder.

Manny's role involved driving the group to the location and, the prosecution alleges, acting as the getaway driver after the stabbing. The jury was told she

undoubtedly
saw that two of her passengers were pre-armed before they entered the house immediately following Kerr's death. After fleeing the scene, all four were later arrested in Hereford.

What evidence exists of a drug-dealing connection?

The exact motive for the attack remains unclear, but prosecutors presented evidence suggesting a possible link to drug dealing. Text messages exchanged between Palfrey and Elliot revealed they were involved in distributing cocaine, ketamine, and cannabis. The messages also discussed collecting drug debts, which they referred to using the term

straps.
The four defendants were driven around various locations in Cardiff and Caerphilly in Manny's vehicle, though the prosecution has not explicitly connected this activity to the fatal assault.

Who is presiding over the trial?

The trial is being heard by High Court judge Mrs Justice Mary Stacey. The case had originally been scheduled to begin on 3 August but was postponed. The trial was moved from its original 3 August start date to 5 October, with jury selection completed the day before proceedings commenced.

What happens next?

The prosecution opened its case to the jury on 6 October. The trial was estimated to last four to six weeks, meaning a verdict may not be reached until late October or November. The jury will need to determine whether the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that all four defendants are guilty of murder through their participation in a joint enterprise.
