A specialized search vessel is being deployed to locate two missing fishermen and their boat off the coast of Lewis. According to BBC News, Norman "Tam" Murray, 40, and Murdo Morrison, 23, were aboard the fishing boat Kilda when it vanished on 13 October. The body of their crewmate Douglas Craigie, 49, was recovered from the sea in the early hours of 14 October by rescue personnel.

Police Scotland announced that the Northern Lighthouse Board's vessel NLV Pharos would be brought in to assist the operation. The ship is equipped with hydrographic and wreck survey equipment designed for locating and investigating submerged objects and vessels. This development follows police identification of an area of interest in the search, which had narrowed the focus of recovery efforts.

During earlier search operations the previous week, several items belonging to the fishing boat had been recovered from the water. These discoveries provided investigators with physical evidence relating to the vessel's fate, though the primary objective remains locating the two missing men and determining the circumstances of the incident.

What is the scope of the ongoing investigation?

Inspector Neil Taylor confirmed that the search effort would continue with support from multiple agencies including the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, the coastguard, and local maritime specialists. The coordination of these organizations reflects the complexity and significance of the operation, which has been described as one of the worst fishing tragedies in a generation.

The inspector emphasized the importance of obtaining answers for all those affected by the tragedy. He stated:

"It is imperative we get answers for everyone involved and please be assured our efforts are continuing."

What safety measures are in place?

Authorities have issued a clear warning to members of the public regarding the dangers of the search area. Inspector Taylor urged people to refrain from conducting independent search operations in locations that could expose them to harm. He said:

"We would urge people not to put themselves at any risk. Please do not attempt to carry out searches in areas which put you at risk of harm."

The deployment of the NLV Pharos represents a significant escalation in the technical capability available to the search teams, bringing specialized equipment that can operate in challenging maritime conditions off the north coast of Lewis.
