Seven people have been arrested following a shooting that left a police officer injured in Nottingham city centre. According to BBC News, the male officer was shot in the foot after approaching two people at a bus stop in Angel Row shortly before 04:50 BST on 18 October 2026. He remains in hospital continuing his recovery from injuries that authorities have described as serious but not life-threatening.

Three additional arrests were made on 20 October as the investigation intensified. A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were detained on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender, and both remain in custody. A 21-year-old woman was arrested in London on 19 October on suspicion of assisting an offender and has since been released on conditional bail.

The initial response on 18 October saw officers stop a vehicle in the Radford area of Nottingham on Sunday evening, leading to the arrest of three occupants. A 27-year-old woman was held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. Two other occupants—a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman—were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and have been released on conditional bail.

A 30-year-old man arrested in Bedfordshire during the early hours of 19 October was questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has since been recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his licence.

What the police commissioner said about the injuries

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden stated on 19 October that while the officer's injuries were not life-threatening, they were likely to be life-altering. He emphasised the dangers inherent in policing, noting that the officer had been attempting to speak to two individuals acting suspiciously when the incident occurred. The BBC reported that the officer was in a stable condition as of 19 October.

Investigation and community response

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Bull said:

The investigation team continues to work tirelessly to establish exactly what happened before, during and after this appalling incident. I would like to thank them, along with colleagues from other police forces, for their continued support and assistance. It remains crucial that anyone with information about this incident comes forward and speaks to us. The injured officer was carrying out his duty to protect the public and it is truly abhorrent that this has happened to him. We continue to support him as he undergoes further treatment in hospital and are keeping him and his family fully informed of developments in the investigation.

Officers appealed for anyone with information to contact the force

Nadia Whittome, Labour MP for Nottingham East, addressed concerns about the incident in relation to the city's history. She acknowledged that people would be worried about a return to the days of gun violence in Nottingham, but stressed that the firearm had been recovered and that such incidents remain very rare.

Firearms offences are down in Nottingham and are at the same levels as the rest of the country. It no doubt will be damaging to the reputation of the city, especially because of our past, but I think that we also saw was an extremely rare incident that was the worst of our city. But we also saw the best of our city. At quarter to five on Sunday morning, people coming together doing everything that they could to assist, and I think that we have to take comfort in that as well.

The city's history with high-profile shootings and gang violence in the early 2000s has contributed to its reputation, though the lead detective indicated that he did not believe Nottingham was returning to that period.

What happens next in the investigation

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, with substantial resources deployed until those responsible are identified and brought to justice. Detectives continue to appeal for anyone with information about the incident to contact Nottinghamshire Police.
