Security camera footage appears to capture several police vehicles pursuing a car just minutes before a fatal crash that claimed seven lives, including two police officers, in the area near Middlesbrough.

The video is believed to have been recorded on Lime Road at 03:36 BST on Saturday morning, approximately three minutes before a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction on the A66 struck a marked police vehicle nearby.

Was the police car in the crash part of the pursuit?

The police vehicle involved in the collision was not participating in the chase, according to information available to the BBC. The pursuit itself had concluded before the fatal impact occurred.

What investigation has been launched?

Following a mandatory referral made by Cleveland Police, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated a formal investigation to examine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
