A nine-year-old girl has died following a two-vehicle crash in the Scottish Highlands on Wednesday evening. The child was a rear seat passenger in a Volkswagen Polo that collided with a Ford Ranger at approximately 17:30 on the A831 between Drumnadrochit and Cannich, in an area south of Inverness. Emergency responders, including an air ambulance, attended the scene, but the girl was pronounced dead at the location. A front seat passenger from the Polo was transported to hospital for medical care.
The A831 remained closed for seven hours following the incident to enable a thorough investigation by police and other emergency services.
What police are asking of witnesses
Sergeant Kate Finlayson appealed for information from anyone who may have seen the crash or the vehicles involved in the moments before the collision.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the girl who died, and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances,"she said.
"I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or the vehicles prior to contact us."
The sergeant also requested that anyone in the vicinity who captured dashcam footage of the incident come forward, as such recordings could prove valuable to the ongoing investigation.
