A man in his 40s was found shot dead inside a car on St Bartholomew's Road in Newham, east London, in the early hours of 18 August 2026. The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the scene at approximately 03:00 BST and discovered the victim suffering from gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene, and a murder investigation is now under way.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the man's family have been notified of his death and are receiving support from specially trained officers. A cordon remains in place along St Bartholomew's Road, and as of the latest update, no arrests have been made in connection with the killing.

What happened at the scene?

At the location, investigators erected an evidence tent close to a white Toyota Prius, which had been in collision with a black Range Rover. The owner of the Range Rover, Abdul Qadir, described hearing the incident unfold overnight.

"My daughter heard the car alarm go off and she heard the shots, like a bomb. She heard the impact of two vehicles. And I heard people running off."
"It's the third time my car's been collided with – so I thought it's 03:00, I'm not going out to investigate."
"I just went back to sleep, because I know this happens around here."
"Then up to 10 minutes after I heard people gathering. They said someone had been shot."

How have local residents responded?

Several people living near the cordon described hearing the disturbance but not immediately realising what had happened. One neighbour, who asked not to be identified, recalled the sequence of sounds.

"Around 03:00 or 04:00 I heard a crash and then a car alarm going on, and then it went off."

He added that he checked outside roughly an hour later but saw nothing unusual. A woman living close to the cordon initially assumed the noise was reckless driving.

"We heard a bullet noise first and then a car driving very quickly. We thought it was boys racing. We came to know in the morning someone had been shot."

Another woman, who did not wish to give her name, said she had lived in the area for more than five decades and had generally felt safe, though she noted a rise in local crime.

"It's the same everywhere isn't it?"

A further resident said the shooting had shaken her sense of security enough to change her plans for the day.

"It's made me feel really uneasy, I was going to go to work this morning and didn't because I didn't want to leave the kids."
"It's upsetting, I think this is the first time something like this has happened nearby. Generally we feel pretty safe, now we might not feel as safe."

What has the investigation found so far?

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten acknowledged the impact the incident would have on the community and outlined the police response.

"We know this incident will cause concern in the local area, and I want to reassure the community that my team and I are doing everything we can to determine what happened and trace those responsible."
"Those in the area will continue to see an increased police presence throughout the day while these inquiries continue."

He appealed directly for anyone with information about the death to contact police. Separately, according to Metropolitan Police, officers have confirmed the victim was found inside the vehicle and formally described the case as a fatal shooting in Newham.

This is one of several recent fatal shootings and stabbings across London. Officers previously investigated the death of a 14-year-old boy, named after a fatal shooting in Woolwich, which led to three arrests, and a separate case in which six people were arrested on suspicion of murder after a 23-year-old woman was found dead in Islington, though all six were later released on bail.

What happens next?

Police have said the increased presence of officers in the St Bartholomew's Road area will continue while the investigation progresses, according to a national broadcaster's report. Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward, and the report noted that coverage of the case was last updated at 14:16 BST on 18 August 2026.

Government figures cited in the original reporting show that shootings accounted for 32 homicides in England and Wales between April 2024 and March 2025, representing 6% of all homicide cases recorded in that period.
